Your time
for connection and healing.

A warm welcome.

I offer:

  • therapy for adults experiencing such states as anxiety, depression and the impacts of grief, neurodiversity, chronic stress and trauma.

  • clinical supervision for therapists and care professionals

My approach is somatic (body-mind-based), blending resilience- and nervous system-informed approaches.

Therapy services

Somatic therapy with me brings together a supportive, grounding relationship with a science-backed approach to healing and growth. All your experiences are welcome.

The challenges that bring us to therapy are often a result of the way our nervous system has adapted over time to the difficulties we have faced - sometimes before we are even born.

Far from being a sign of personal failure or 'not trying hard enough', experiences we may call anxiety, depression and trauma symptoms are a result of our internal resources being pushed into protective 'survival' mode too much over time.

By growing our understanding of how our brain and nervous system have adapted to such challenges, and building our capacity to draw on the resources within and outside ourselves, we are able to feel more comfortable, at peace and resilient. This also allows us - where relevant - not just to process traumatic experiences but actually grow emotionally stronger as a result.

The relationship between us is also a key factor in how well therapy works for you, and I welcome your feedback in order to develop a warm, trustworthy and collaborative alliance.

Perhaps some of the following experiences sound familiar:

Difficult thoughts, feelings, sensations or relational dynamics are impacting on your ability to live in the way you used to or believe you could.

Such challenges as anxiety, depression, phobias, panic and other mental health 'disorders', their roots often in chronic stress or trauma, are limiting your capacity to experience ease, joy and a connection to your inner resources.

Additionally, alongside appropriate medical support, incorporating carefully-paced somatic practice into our self-care routine can also support with more physical concerns such as autoimmune conditions, digestive complaints, chronic pain, insomnia and migraines.

Over time, this work can help you:

  • feel more resilient and resourced
  • respond rather than react when you feel stressed or triggered
  • soften long-held patterns of tension, anxiety, shutdown and post-traumatic symptoms
  • build a kinder, more trusting relationship with yourself

Supervision

Supervision with me is informed by two fundamental principles:

  • The power of the relationship. My goal is for a supervisee to feel comfortable enough to bring any concerns, curiosities or goals to our sessions and leave feeling supported, more resourced and excited for the any relevant developmental steps that emerge.

  • The power of our innate resilience. Our evolving understanding of the nervous system and Polyvagal Theory in particular, inform all the work I do - both in supporting therapists themselves, as well as their clients indirectly. You do not have to have an in-depth understanding of/training in neurobiology or somatics to work with me - just a curiosity about how mental health and the physical body are interwoven, and a willingness to explore how this applies to your and your clients' process experientially. Supervisees have told me this perspective offers deep value no matter their training and orientation.

About Jo

I am a BACP senior-accredited psychotherapist and have been in practice for over 15 years.

During that time I've worked with adults and young people experiencing a wide variety of challenges, within charitable organisations, higher education and in private practice. I have also taught on a postgraduate diploma in counselling.

My journey into the profession started with my own therapy and opened up the rich world of working with the nervous system to enable healing and growth. In times of my own challenge, I have been reminded time and time again how powerful our own resources are, when connection to them is supported by the empathic presence of another.

I have the ongoing privilege of working with some some incredible mentors and trainers, who - not least through engagement with their own bodily wisdom - continue to shape our understanding of the pathways back to wellness, and who have offered me opportunities to feel deeply connected to my own resources and the joy of being alive in my own skin.

In order to support others, I maintain a personal daily practice of movement and meditation - including polyvagal-informed yoga and somatic movement, as well as regular supervision and therapy, all of which support me to be as present as possible with my clients.

I hold qualifications/have undertaken training in:

- Somatic Developmental Trauma Therapy (The Embody Lab)

- Somatic Experiencing® (developed by Dr. Peter Levine)

- Formative Psychology (developed by Stanley Keleman)

- Person-Centred Counselling (Metanoia Institute, London)

- Equine-Assisted Therapy (The Equine Therapy Center, Monmouthshire)

- High Intensity Psychological Therapies (University of Exeter)
